Lledo (eds.), Neurosciences From Molecule to Behavior: A University Textbook, DOI 10.1007/978-3-642-10769-6_30, © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013 The nervous system faces a most challenging task – to receive information from the outside world, process it, to change adaptively, and to generate an output – the appropriate behavior of the organism in a complex world. The research agenda of computational neuroscience ( CN ) is to use theoretical tools in order to understand how the different elements composing the nervous system: membrane ion channels, synapses, neurons, networks, and the systems they form, address this demanding challenge. CN deals with theoretical questions at both the cellular and subcellular levels, as well as at the networks, system, and behavioral levels. It focuses both on extracting basic biophysical principles (e.g., the rules governing the input-output relationship in single neurons) as well as on highlevel rules governing the computational functions of a whole system, e.g., “How is a spot of light moving in the visual fi eld encoded in the retina?” Or “how do networks of interconnected neurons represent and retain memories?” Ultimately, CN aims to understand, via mathematical theory, how do high-level phenomena such as cognition, emotions, creativity, and imagination, as well as brain disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, emerge from elementary brain-mechanisms. Here we highlight a few theoretical approaches used in CN and provide the respective fundamental insights that were gained. We start with biophysical models of single neurons and end with examples for models at the network level.

Capturing Outlines of Planar Generic Images by Simultaneous Curve Fitting and Sub-division
In this paper, a new technique has been designed to capture the outline of 2D shapes using cubic B´ezier curves. The proposed technique avoids the traditional method of optimizing the global squared fitting error and emphasizes the local control of data points. A maximum error has been determined to preserve the absolute fitting error less than a criterion and it administers the process of curv...
متن کاملA Funchtional Model Of Development and Expression in an Artificial Organism
This paper is placed at the intersection-point between the study of theoretical computational models aimed at capturing the essence of genetic regulatory networks and the field of Artificial Embryology (or Computational Development). A model is proposed, with the objective of providing an effective way to generate arbitrary forms by using evolutionarydevelopmental techniques. Preliminary experi...
متن کاملComputational Simulation of Hydrodynamic Convection in Rising Bubble Under Microgravity Condition
In this work, rising of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid under microgravity condition was simulated. The related unsteady incompressible full Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a conventional finite difference method with a structured staggered grid. The interface was tracked explicitly by connected marker points via hybrid front capturing and tracking method. One field approximatio...
متن کاملThe place of human psychophysics in modern neuroscience
Human psychophysics is the quantitative measurement of our own perceptions. In essence, it is simply a more sophisticated version of what humans have done since time immemorial: noticed and reflected upon what we can see, hear, and feel. In the 21st century, when hugely powerful techniques are available that enable us to probe the innermost structure and function of nervous systems, is human ps...
متن کاملComputational implications of biophysical diversity and multiple timescales in neurons and synapses for circuit performance.
Despite advances in experimental and theoretical neuroscience, we are still trying to identify key biophysical details that are important for characterizing the operation of brain circuits. Biological mechanisms at the level of single neurons and synapses can be combined as 'building blocks' to generate circuit function. We focus on the importance of capturing multiple timescales when describin...
